The overwhelming visual element of the window is the parting of the Yam Suf, the Reed Sea. Beyond the sea is the mountainous landscape of the wilderness and in the distance, Har Sinai. The border design includes 14 roundels containing images associated with the 15 parts (Motzei and Matza are combined) of the Pesach seder. They are presented in chronological order, from top to bottom, starting on right and continuing on the left.

The imagery in the four center panels is specific to each holiday. Purim is represented by the open scroll bearing the opening text of Megilat Esther, Chanukah by the seven-branched temple Menorah and a flask of oil, Yom Ha’Atzmaut by the Kenesset chanukiah, and Yom Yerushalayim by the lion of the Jerusalem emblem. The two landscapes below reflect the ancient history and modern status of Israel and Jerusalem symbolized by David’s Citadel and the Chords Bridge respectively. The repeated design element in the arch, central window, and border is the Star of David. The border design has an underlying hexagram motif and the Star of David emerges from it.

The window border takes on an arbor-like chuppah form and is covered with roses. Jewish tradition tells us that the giving of the Torah was akin to a marriage between Hashem and the Jewish people and that Har Sinai was covered with flowers. The Jewish people are referred to as shoshanim (translated as roses or lilies). The roses are organized in 7 groups of 7 for a total of 49 symbolizing the 49 days of the Omer counted between Pesach and Shavuot. The arbor frames a landscape that includes a harvest scene in the foreground and, in the background, Har Sinai. Shavuot is referred to in the Torah as chag ha’katzir (Shemot 23:16), the time of the grain harvest. In addition, the harvest scene recalls the story of the Ruth, read on the holiday of Shavuot, with its story line that revolves around the grain harvest. The two standing sheaves represent the two loaves of wheat bread, Sh’nai Halechem, that were brought in the Beit HaMikdash as the prescribed holiday offering. Shavuot was also the beginning of the bringing of the bikkurim, the offering of the first fruit. Those of the sheva minim that may have ripened in time for Shavuot are seen in the bikkurim basket: wheat, barley, figs, dates, and grapes.

The border design with its long, twisted shofer shapes and honeycomb pattern, frames the central portion of the windows. This window presents many of the symbolic foods served at the Rosh Hashanah meal. The most popular of these is apple with honey (represented by the honeycomb and beehive). Additional symbolic foods are depicted in the center. They are (clockwise from top): beets, fish head, leeks, round challah, pomegranate, dates, carrots, cabbage, and a goats head.

This window depicts the twin goats brought as part of the temple service, one la’Hashem and one la’Azazel. The landscapes below indicate the fate of each: one was sacrificed on the altar of the Beit HaMikdash, the other was taken to a rocky, mountainous terrain to be killed. The goats are seen in front of a parting curtain, the perochet, that divided the larger chamber of the Beit HaMikdash from the smaller kodesh kodashim (Holy of Holies). It was there that once a year the Kohain Gadol was permitted to enter, bearing the ketoret (incense offering). Swirls of smoke rise up from the fire pan, filled with coals, and around the scales, symbolic of man’s deeds being weighed, and the three key elements of our current Yom Kippur service: Teshuva (Repentance), Tefilah (Prayer), Tzedakah (Charity).

The central image is a sukkah, a temporary dwelling constructed by farmers, depicted in a fertile landscape of fields and orchards and focuses on Sukkot as an agricultural holiday. The clouds that protected the Jewish people in the desert are indicated by the clouds above the scene that part to make way for the divine light emanating from the Torah. The border on the right depicts the arbah minim (lulav, etrog, hadassim, and aravot). The left border depicts the sheva minim, the produce of the land of Israel which are (from top to bottom): dates, pomegranates, figs, grapes, wheat, olives, and barley. The quantity of each reflects their place next to the word eretz in the verse in Devarim 8:8, Eretz chittah u’seorah v’gefen u’teenah v’rimon eretz ziet shemen u’dvash: one sheave of wheat, two sheaves of barley, three clusters of grapes, four figs, five pomegranates, one branch of olives and two clusters of dates. Below the central image is a spring of water, recollecting the water offering that was brought on Sukkot.

The center of the window depicts the stones of the temple mount and the Beit HaMikdash enveloped by an inferno. Below is the barbed wire of the concentration camps from which the blaze rises and culminates in six tongues of flame representing the six million killed in the Holocaust. The border consists of the mandated badges worn by Jews in WWII Europe. Depicted from top to bottom on the right are those of Belgium, France, Germany, Romania, and Holland and on the left Germany, two versions found in Slovakia, Holland, and Germany.
